1. считать, решать - и т.п. [adv]

⇒ (to count, solve a problem etc) mentally, without writing anything down (may refer to the unwritten transfer of a number from one column to another when doing an arithmetical calculation; the whole problem may or may not be written down):

- (count <add etc>) in one's head (mind);

- [in refer, to the unwritten transfer of a number] carry (in one's head).

     ♦ Была у Александра Ивановича удивительная способность. Он мгновенно умножал и делил в уме большие трёхзначные и четырёхзначные числа (Ильф и Петров 2). Alexander Ivanovich had a remarkable gift. With lightning speed he could multiply and divide in his mind large three-digit and four-digit figures (2b).

     ♦ Ничего, кое-как [Маргарита Антоновна] пересчитывала, делила на бумажке уголком, вспоминая школьные правила: "пять пишем, два в уме..." (Грекова 3). Never mind, somehow she recalculated, divided on the corner of the page, recalling the school rules: write five, carry the two (3a).

2. прикидывать, взвешивать - и т.п. [adv]

⇒ (to consider, contemplate, weigh etc sth.) mentally, without saying anything aloud:

- inwardly;

- in one's mind;

- to oneself.

     ♦ Пантелей никогда не ругал бывшего друга ни вслух, ни в уме (Аксёнов 6). Pantelei never swore at his former friend, neither inwardly or aloud (6a).

3. coll [subj-compl with быть (subj: human, usu. 2nd pers), pres only; used (usu. in questions) as Interj]

⇒ (used to express amazement, indignation, resentment etc in refer, to sth. said or done by the interlocutor) do you know what you are saying (or doing)?:

- да ты в уме? - are you in your right mind?;

- are you out of your mind?;

- are you off your head (rocker etc)?;

- what are you saying (doing)?

     ♦ "Убил отца он [Смердяков], а не брат. Он убил, а я его научил убить... Кто не желает смерти отца?.." - "Вы в уме или нет?" - вырвалось невольно у председателя (Достоевский 2). "It was he [Smerdyakov] who killed father, not my brother He killed him, and killed him on my instructions. ... Who doesn't wish for his father's death?..." "Are you in your right mind?" inadvertently escaped from the judge (2a).
